Looking for specific information and not having much success?
The following is a breakdown of how to conduct a search from the Holocaust Resource Center.
13 "Gates" and 60 Sub-Topics
When looking for information on a particular subject, the place to start is by referring to one of the thirteen main subjects denoted here as "Gates". If one of the Gates is related to your subject of interest, check through the sub-topics listed under that same "Gate".
Upon making a selection from one of the thirteen "Gates", the following information becomes available:
- An introduction to the subject
- A list of ten items on the subject
- Links to the full list of resources on the subject including their categories according to their original subject (so one can choose, for example, only "Photos" that are related to your topic of interest.)
The advantage to this search method is in that it provides immediate access to a variety of resources their relevant subjects.
130 Keywords
If the subject on which you are looking for information is not one of the thirteen main topics, or, if you are not sure which of the 13 main topics deals with your area of interest.
In either of the above cases, the ideal search method would be by utilizing the Keyword option. To the right of the screen below the "Gate" titles is a list of 130 Keywords arranged alphabetically. The key words have been chosen from the most commonly used and essential terms from the Resource Center and in all probability you will find words associated with your research topic. Using this tool, you will find, for example, place names such as "France". (Under "France" will appear a list of sources from the various "Gates" from "Jewish life under the Nazis", to "The Final Solution" and "The Righteous Among the Nations").
Source Category
If your search is limited to a particular source category or type, such as, for example, Pictures, Official Historical Documents, Testimonies or Articles, from the main page of the Holocaust Resource Center you are able to select the specific form of information. Here is available a condensed list of ten items related to your subject and access to the full list in the Resource Center.
Note: The full list of resources categorized into the "Gates" and the "sub topics" cannot be acquired from this page. If you are looking for sources of a particular type (e.g. Testimonies) on a particular subject (e.g. Local Population) it would be best to commence your search through the "Gates" and proceed from there. These lists are always categorized according to the type of source thus from this list one can choose the specific category is of interest. Otherwise, the "Combined Search" method is preferred.
Advanced Search The Combined Search method is preferred for all defined or specific search requirements. To refine your search you can combine these three search methods. By means of this method, you can select the specific characteristic elements - type, source, Gate, sub-topic, keyword and language, and acquire a list of articles answering to the specific requirements named. In the future, an additional feature will be added which will provide links between the various characteristics with a word-string search.
