Welcome to the 24th issue of Teaching the Legacy. This edition focuses on the fate of children in France during the Holocaust and the people and organizations that tried to hide them and save them. It features an interview with Israel (Zizi) Lichtenstein, himself a hidden child in southern France, and some of the artifacts that survived with him through the war. There is an article on the different organizations that worked to rescue children in France, and some of the heroic people who rescued a Jewish boy during the Holocaust. As always, the newsletter features new publications, book reviews, and updates on recent and upcoming activities at the International School for Holocaust Studies and across Yad Vashem. We hope you find this issue interesting and resourceful, and we look forward to your feedback.
Background Article – “From Democracy to Deportation”
This article gives background history to the Holocaust in France. It also provides some tools for using this as a topic in classroom lessons and discussion.
“Hidden Children”
This article details the various ways that children in France were rescued by organizations and communities during the Holocaust. Including survivor testimony, this piece lends insight into the tremendous effort that led to the survival of many Jews.
What’s New at Yad Vashem
- “Yad Vashem and Google Partner to Preserve and Share Holocaust Archives”
- Featured Exhibition: “Witness to the Holocaust: The Oneg Shabbat Archives” - The Oneg Shabbat Archives contain sources written and gathered by the victims as they experienced the horrors.
- A recent research project at Yad Vashem is the Deportation Database and Online Guide, which is part of a large-scale research project –"Transports to Extinction."
- Mini-Site Marking 70 years to Operation Barbarossa: “From Persecution to Mass Murder, 1941 – A Turning Point in the Fate of the Jews”. This mini-site focuses on the mass murder carried out by Einsatzgruppen units in the Soviet Union.
- The 61st issue of the Yad Vashem Magazine – Spring 2011 is now online. The magazine contains the following features:
- Fragments of Memory: The Faces Behind the Documents, Artifacts and Photographs, by Dr. Robert Rozett.
- Gathering the Fragments, by Lital Beer
- Projects of Our Seminar Graduates.
- Israel’s Chairmanship of the International Task Force drew to a close in March, 2011. - Recent Visit of Daughter of Righteous Among the Nations to Yad Vashem. Theresa Zabinski, daughter of Jan and Antonina Zabinski, who hid Jews on the grounds of the Warsaw Zoo, visited Yad Vashem last month. Read their moving story here.

What’s New on the International School for Holocaust Studies Website
- Online Courses with Gmul Credit – We are currently wrapping up the newest of the four online courses with gmul credit for Israeli teachers that we currently offer: At the Edge of the Abyss: Prewar Jewish Life in Europe.” The next course to be offered will be “Commemoration and Remembrance”, which is scheduled to begin October 10, 2011. What’s New at the International School for Holocaust Studies
- European Department: Work with Swiss Pre-Service Teachers
For the first time, a cooperation agreement was signed between Yad Vashem and a Swiss institution to promote Holocaust education. - Jewish World Department's International Seminars for Educators
The Department represented Yad Vashem in Paris, and hosted seminars for educators from Hungary, Holland and the United States. - International Seminars in the English Department
China, Australia, the US and Canada were on the list of countries in which and for which the English Department recently held seminars and workshops.
