Prof. Walter Zwi Bacharach is Professor Emeritus of General History at Bar-Ilan University. As a Holocaust survivor who immigrated to Israel after the WWII, we ask him for his thoughts today on his own postwar experiences, the difficulties in telling his story, the impact on his religious outlook, and on current events. Survivors Speak about their Lives after the Holocaust
This year will mark the 60th anniversary of the founding of the State of Israel, and the postwar contribution of Holocaust survivors within Israeli society cannot be overstated. For this article, we have interviewed seven survivors living in Israel, asking them specifically about their experiences and thoughts after the Holocaust – an oft-overlooked subject within Holocaust education. Born in Radom, Poland, Eliezer Ayalon lost all of his family during the Holocaust. In this interview, Ayalon shares his perspective on the complex relationship between the local Israeli populace and survivors during the first postwar years, his service in the Israeli army fighting in the War of Independence, and the vital importance of personal testimony.
